Abuda played eleven seasons in the PBA, most of them with the San Miguel Beermen. Abuda was a player of limited physical talent, but through hard work and determination he blossomed into an important role player on several championship-winning San Miguel Beermen teams. He was not much of a scorer but he was one of the league's best defenders and a solid rebounder.
PBA commentators dubbed him "The Scavenger" as a large proportion of his points were the result of his scoring on a follow-up after rebounding a teammate's missed shot. Another phrase commentators would sometimes use was "ang sipag at tiyaga ni Freddie Abuda", which literally translates to "the hard work and persistence of Freddie Abuda", this to describe his tireless work ethic.
Abuda was known also as a humble, simple man and was so well-liked that when he was traded by the San Miguel Beermen to the Coca Cola Tigers late in his career, some teammates were in tears as they bid him farewell.
